Robert Alderson studied singing at the RNCM with the late Frederic Cox. On leaving College, he joined Scottish Opera for three years after which he returned to Manchester to study for his PGCE in Secondary Education, which he gained with distinction. Within a year of qualifying, he was promoted to Head of Music in a large comprehensive school. Many of his pupils went on to study singing at some of Britain’s major conservatoires. Several of these young singers have since joined some of the most important opera houses worldwide. The Spectator Magazine comments:
“…it is highly unusual to find someone with the acute ear of Robert Alderson, he was responsible for encouraging a whole generation of singers now making successful careers at English Nation Opera “
Robert joined the teaching staff at the RNCM in 1986, and during his time as a senior lecturer he has produced some of the college’s most important alumni from the vocal studies department, including Christine Rice, Alice Coote, Rafael Rojas, John Daszak and Ashley Holland. As well as working singers, many of his past students have progressed to important administrative positions within music colleges and opera houses.
Robert is much in demand as a singing teacher, and has a highly regarded international profile with singers traveling to work regularly with him from Poland, Belgium, Switzerland, as well as established English- based singers.
Robert was vocal consultant for setting up the Flanders Opera Studio in Ghent, and until recently held an adjunct professional chair at the Royal Flemish Conservatoire. He is still an adjunct Professor in the Conservatory in Krasnodar, Russia where he has been honoured with a Doctor of Culture and Arts by Russian State Federation after a series of masterclasses in the Conservertoire of Krasnodar and the Tchaikovsky Conservertoire in Moscow.
In 2008 he gave classes in Australia at The National Institute of the Arts. This led to an invitation for him to work with the young singers at WAPPA in Australia 2012. His international career takes him to Cairo where he works with both singing teachers and their students in the
Faculty of Music Education in Cairo, and in 2010 he was a member of the board at the First International Conference of Music and the Performing Arts held in Cairo. When in Cairo, he also works with the young artists in the Cairo Opera House. He has given classes in Delhi, India, and in the vocal department of the University of Connecticut. This last summer he taught in Venice and gave masterclasses in Cairo. This coming April he is scheduled to return to India to continue his work with the young singers in Delhi .
Students of Robert Alderson’s have progressed on to sing principal roles at many leading international opera and concert venues including: The Metropolitan Opera NY, Munich, La Scala, The Royal Opera, Glyndebourne English National Opera. Royal Festival Hall, Wigmore Hall and the Carnegie Hall USA.
Robert teaches each week in the vocal studies department at the National Conservatory of Music and Drama in Dublin. He is also a schools Governor for the Manchester Local Education Authority.
